Game Time!

So the day has arrived!  It seems like ages ago that I started this journey.   Each day I marked off the training on the overview of the entire training schedule.  16 weeks of training and there are no more boxes left to cross off.  It is game time!  I am nervous and excited and will finish this race come hell or high water.  I coughed up some blood today on the final training run.  CF just giving me one last little F-you before I kick its ass tomorrow.

The support these past few days has been overwhelming.  I am humbled by the beautiful article that was in the NY Times.

I love you all!  Thank you for all of your support, advice and encouragement.

It is time for me to get some sleep before I wake up and catch a bus at 5:45am out to Staten Island. Goodnight. If you see me out there tomorrow scream my name loud and know that you are helping me get to the finish line.

Thanks for reading.

Hi Kevin, a friend of mine posted a link to your story on my FB page and I’m so glad she did because your story is so touching and inspiring to me. Almost 5 years ago I lost my second brother to CF (our other brother passed when he was 6 months). He fought and fought and fought (he was pretty stubborn) and made it to 40!!! There is hope- there is always hope. I have always felt SO fortunate to have been without the disease so, the year before he passed away, I decided that because he COULDN’T run…I would for him. And I ran the LA Marathon on his behalf and all those who can’t run because of that horrible illness. My bib said “CURE CF”… and I pray someday there will be a cure.
I love your spirit, your hope and your fight! Keep it up. There are so many people out there, CF and no-CF, who look up to you! And congratulations on your engagement. What a beautiful story.

  1. Hi Kevin,
I’m so glad I was able to find your blog. I saw you on TV this morning by chance when my dog stepped on the remote, and I’m so glad I did! It would be a lie to say that CF has “really” touched my life, but in a very small way it has, so I am always interested in any news stories about it. When I was pregnant with my first child, I discovered that I was a CF carrier. No one in my family has CF, so I only did the screening on a whim. Fortunately, my husband is not a carrier, so our child does not have the disease. He does, however, have another non-genetic disease called Progressive Infantile Scoliosis. It’s even more rare than CF with only 1 in 10,000 babies affected. The good news is that he is in a plaster torso cast (the first of a series; he gets a new one every 8 weeks while under anesthesia) that has a 94% chance of straightening his crooked spine. Anyways, I digress. I just wanted to write to tell you what an astounding inspiration you are. I was smiling through tears as I watched the news story of your running. What determination you have! Congratulations on finishing the marathon — how very amazing! Also, congratulations on your engagement. That’s another thing that inspired me this morning. It appears you have a really good girl in Katie! I can only hope my son meets someone like her … hopefully in MANY more years (he’s 18 months). Anyways, keep inspiring us!!! Best wishes always.

  2. Kevin!

Congrats on your amazing accomplishments (and recent engagement)!! I am just starting my own journey into running (my goal right now is a 5k). I just know the challenges I’ve faced/ will face and I can’t even begin to compare. I just wanted to thank you for the inspiration! Always welcome with winter pending 🙂 I’m blogging along the way and look forward to using you experience as a resource. Thank you for sharing!

    Kevin –
Good for you!!!! I cheered very, very loudly for all the Boomer shirts I saw yesterday during the marathon:) This past summer I made the trip up to Central Park from here in Richmond, VA, to run the Boomer’s 10K Run to Breathe with my friend. Her son has CF. It was a very, very powerful day. All the best to you.

Hey Kevin – just ‘discovered’ you today and read your story. Congratulations on your engagement and bigger congratulations on finishing the marathon. Saw this fascinating article in Popular Science not long ago – maybe you haven’t heard about it and can try it. Pretty remarkable and simple.
